Psycho: Case Study

Convention

Effectiveness

1. Diegetic Sound

Shower scene: water trickling, Marion screaming,

Car scene: raining, wind screen wipers, car engine, car door being open and shut

Dialogue

Telephone scene: number dialling and dialogue

2. Non Diegetic Sound

Slow music: creates miserable atmosphere

Fast music: creates suspense

3. Mise En Scene

(Setting, location, lighting and costume)

Office scene: located at office, bright room filled with a few people also with desk’s full of accessories

Car scene: lots of cars in the background

Bates Motel: dark setting,

Shower room: bright light,

Telephone scene: dark setting, in red phone booth, creates suspense as detective is wearing professional uniform, e.g. hat and coat

4. Cinematography









(Camera angle, camera shots)

Extreme close up: plug hole in shower scene, suggesting soul being taken away

Panning shot: this shot is shown at the start of the movie showing the city

Tracking shot: Marion walking to the toilet

Medium long shot: Lila and Sam walking around the Motel

5. Editing

(Special effects)

Dissolving effects: end of shower scene, highlighting consciousness

Cut effects: in shower, showing different parts of Marion’s body

Fast paced editing: in shower scene, to show tension

Action Match: Marion screaming while getting stabbed, zoom in on mouth, suggesting

6. Narrative

Marion steals money because her boyfriend is in debt problem. Marion flees and stays in the Bate Motel. She then is murdered and her sister and boyfriend are investigating her murder.
